Threads :: Black Dress and Bear Ear Beanie

Today's style post is featuring a typical look you can find me in on the weekends: a black dress and my bear ear beanie. I love my bear ear beanie from Urban Outfitters. It's a great way to add some fun to any outfit. I got a few years back for Christmas, so they don't have this exact one available any more, but I've pulled some similar options below to get a similar look. The dress is a short sleeved sweater dress that I picked up from the recent Obey Warehouse Sale that you may have seen me blogging about here. I love the look of over-the-knee socks paired with a dress or skirt. In this look I'm wearing one of my favorite pairs of maroon boots from Forever21. There are surprisingly high-quality and are super comfy. I had some fun shooting this look in a sculpture garden with my awesome photographer, Julia Ngo.

For Christmas I received this awesome Argan Oil Skincare Ritual Kit, and I love it! I've been wanting to try out Argan oil for a while now on my skin. I had already heard about all the benefits for hair, but its use for skincare has been trending lately.

This kit came with three-steps to cleanse, nourish and protect.

1.) Cleanse with Argan Oil Cleanser

First impressions and reviews:
I was kind of scared that cleansing and moisturizing with Argan oil would leave my already oily skin even oilier. Surprisingly, it cleansed and moisturized just enough. I absolutely love the cleanser. I can feel all the makeup and dirt melt off my face and it smells so good. For step 2, I only need a few drops to moisturize my face after cleansing, and any extra I rub on the ends of my hair to help with split ends. I've only used the step 3 in the kit a few times since I have a daily moisturizer I'm used to using that has SPF 15 in it. Surprisingly, it doesn't smell like sunscreen and is actually a white color like a traditional lotion. It's not greasy and blends into skin easily. I'd recommend this to anyone, and for this 3 piece kit, this is the perfect size to introduce yourself to an Argan Oil skincare ritual for an affordable price of $24!

Elizabeth Mott All Over Shadow Brush

This brush feels really nice, and is super cute with it's pink color. I normally don't buy bright colored brushes, but this one is pretty cute to have and is a great shadow brush.

Hikari Cosmetics Mechanical Eye Liner
This is a nice dark grey metallic eyeliner. It goes on smoothly, but isn't as pigmented as I would like it to be.

La Fresh Eco-Beauty Be Good. Good Day. Day Moisturizer
This moisturizer feels really nice. I put it all over my face and neck after washing my face for the night. It's not too thick and moisturizes really nicely.

Pacifica Natural Mineral Coconut Eye Shadow
This is a nice champagne highlight color with a slight sheen. It goes on really nicely and works perfectly under your brow bone or inner corner of the eye.

Probelle Into The Blue Nail Lacquer
I really like this color, I actually don't have any nail polish this color. The color comes on nice and opaque after two coats. It won't replace my OPI or Essie though.

Turkey Meatball Recipe

If you're trying to eat a bit healthier, this turkey meatball recipe may be something that you want to try. Making your own meatballs means to you can control what you put into them. Although I love a good beef meatball, subbing for turkey in a classic meatball recipe can be a small stepping stone to eating healthier. Here's how to make some tasty turkey meatballs.

2 lbs of ground turkey
2 tsp of kosher salt
1 tbs of chopped garlic
2 eggs
1/2 cup of plain breadcrumbs
1 dollop of ricotta cheese
1/4 cup of fresh chopped parsley
1/4 cup of fresh chopped oregano

1.) Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2.) Combine all ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Get in there and get your hands dirty :)
3.) Make a small tester patty of the meatball mixture and pan fry it for a taste test. You want to make sure that everything tastes good and make any necessary adjustments before it goes into the oven to bake.
4.) Using an ice cream scoop, or large spoon, scoop the meatball portions on to a lined baking sheet. You want the size of the meatballs to be consistent to ensure that the all cook evenly.
4.) Roll each portion in your hands to compress the meat into a ball and line them up on the baking sheet. Lining them up will help you identify if there's any meatballs that are completely different sized.
5.) Bake for 17 minutes at 375 degrees.

I learned how to make a basic meatball on Skillshare thru a class that was taught by the executive chef at the famous Meatball Shop in New York. I've talked about Skillshare before here where I took a class about the basics of modern calligraphy.
This latest class I took on Skillshare was called:
Show Us Your Balls: Meatball Making with The Meatball Shop

In this class I learned how to make their classic beef meatball and vegetarian tomato sauce using their recipe. It taught the basic techniques and was really easy to follow. Skillshare is an awesome site that has many classes from Photoshop fundamentals to Branding and even Intros to 3D Printing. I really love the idea continuing to learn and challenge myself by taking classes like this.

If you're like me, you're probably sick of hearing everyone say "New year, new you!". But seriously, if you're looking for a way to start your morning right, here's what you can do for a healthy green power breakfast smoothie to kick off the day in the new year. I received a coupon in the mail from Influenster for a complimentary pack of Rader Farms Fresh Start Morning to test and review. I was not compensated for this and the opinions and statements below are my own. This is a pack of frozen fruit and veggies picked at the peak of the season and frozen to ensure freshness and quality.

I'm using the Daily Power Fusion pack with green apple, pineapple, kale, and broccoli.

On the package, there's instructions for a smoothie - 1 cup of the veggies and fruit + 1 cup of water and blend.
Green Power Breakfast Smoothie

Here's what I used for my smoothie version:
1 cup of frozen fruits and veggies
1 cup of coconut water
1/2 a banana
2 tablespoons of chia seed
1 tablespoon of flax seed
BLEND! - I prefer to use my magic bullet because it's a nice single serving that also doubles as a cup that I can take to go with me and easy to clean.

Some notes and modification options
Just remember, you can use any combo of fruits and veggies you like. You can also sub the coconut water for regular water or even almond milk. The flax seed provides fiber, and chia seeds provide protein, fiber and antioxidants. I like to add a spoonful greek yogurt to my smoothies also for extra protein, but when I do, I add some honey or agave to add some sweetness to balance out the tart flavor of the yogurt. The fruits and veggies in this Fresh Start pack itself are very "vegetabley" on their own, I think primarily because of the broccoli, that's why I add the banana to help balance that flavor. 9 Healthy Resolutions for 2015

As we enter the new year, more and more people have asked me about resolutions for the year. I hadn't thought too much about it before the new years, but now that the year has started, here's 9 healthy resolutions to keep for 2015 that are totally doable! And they should become more of a lifestyle than kept for just 1 year.

1.) Hydrate | I never drink enough water, but this is something I'm consciously trying to remember. Treat your skin and body right from the inside out by drinking plenty of water. The general rule of thumb is to take your weight and divide it by 2. That's the number of ounces you need to drink each day. It also helps if you have a pretty water bottle or tumbler that you can carry with you everywhere.

2.) Sleep | I love sleep, but I am guilty, as many of you are, of staying up to watch one extra show every so often. Sleep leads to better mood and better health over all, especially with your skin. I know I tend to breakout when I don't sleep.

3.) Moisturize | It's winter, and my skin is super dry from the cold weather and heaters inside. Renew your skin with a good scrub (like my two DIYs here and here) and moisturize after to seal it all in and keep your skin healthy.

4.) Floss | This one's one that we all know we need to do, but don't do enough of. It's simple and really good for your oral health, so I just gotta make sure to do it!

5.) Throw Away old makeup | Bacteria can accumulate over time on makeup so here's guideline for when it's time to toss it.

6.) Clean your makeup brushes regularly | Check out my how to here. You want to keep your brushes clean because they could accumulate dirt and bacteria which is then transferred to your face. Yuck!

7.) Cook more | Cooking at home leads to healthier cooking because you can control what you put into to your food. Limit the salt and try new recipes! Lemon is a great way to add flavor without adding extra calories. Try making this simple clam dish.

8.) Travel more | Make time to travel. Experiencing new destinations and cultures allows for inspiration and enriching your life and mind. Some major Wanderlust inspo here.

9.) Try new things | This just piggybacks off the idea of travel. Try new things, experiment with new recipes, learn a new hobby or a new language. I always say, try something once before you decide you don't like it.

Easy DIY Sugar Scrub + Printable tags

The past winter months have left my skin feeling super dry, so I thought a scrub would be perfect. I love scrubs and here's an easy DIY that only requires a few ingredients. Remember my coffee shower scrub? Scrubs are good for exfoliating rough dry skin. They moisturize and leave your skin super soft. It only requires a couple of ingredients and you can experiment with different ingredient combinations to customize your perfect scrub.

Here's the magic combination:
1/4 cup Carrier Oil (Coconut, avocado, sunflower, grape seed, or olive oil)
1 cup Sugar (white granulated or brown sugar)
10-15 drops of essential oil (any scent of oil that you prefer, I got mine from Whole Foods but you can also get it here)
Optional food coloring

Here's two combinations that I show below:
Pink Lemonade Scrub: Coconut oil + white sugar + Lemon essential oil + vitamin E
Peppermint Scrub: Coconut oil + white sugar + Peppermint essential oil + vitamin E

1.) Measure 1/4 cup of coconut oil and heat to melt - either in the microwave or on the stove. Coconut oil is solid at room temp, so once heated it will be a clear liquid.
2.) Add 1 cup of sugar to the oil and stir to make a paste - add more sugar or oil to get to a consistency that you're happy with. You're looking for something that resembles wet sand.
3.) Add 10-15 drops of the essential oil of your choice, you can add more or less depending on how you like the smell. You can also add a drop of food coloring at this time. I added 1 drop of red to get the pink for the pink lemonade. For the mint, I added 1 drop of green and 1 drop of blue.
4.) Once everything is combined, you can spoon the mixture into an airtight container like a mason jar. This recipe will fit perfectly into a 8 oz container.
To use: Scoop a spoonful into your hands and rub all over your hands or even feet to help smooth rough skin. Rinse with cold water and pat dry. You can use some mild soap if you don't like the feeling of the excess oil on your skin.

I created these hand written tags with my calligraphy pens and ink. I printed them on to kraft card stock paper and attached to the jars to give out as gifts to friends.
