Asari Garlic Clams

Asari Clams with garlic - This is probably one of my favorite items to get when I go to Japanese Izakaya places like Honda-Ya or Kappo Honda. I noticed that they sell these small asari clams at the Japanese market, so I thought I would try to replicate this dish at home. I found a recipe online that I could follow here and modified it a bit. In this version I show here, I added mushrooms, which is totally optional. I normally don't include it.

Ingredients: serves 2
fresh clams (about 1 lb)
1/2 tbs butter
1 stalk spring onion - chopped
2 cloves of garlic - chopped or sliced
1/2 cup sake
1/2 cup water
Mushroom (optional)

Directions (pics below):
1.) Clean the clams and soak in brine (1 tsp salt in 2 1/2 cups water) for at least 1 hr so that any sand can be released from the clam. Rinse.
2.) Melt butter in a pot.
3.) Add the white part of spring onion and garlic. Stir fry until fragrant.
4.) Mix in clams and mushrooms, seasoning with black pepper.
5.) Pour in sake and water.
6.) Cover and bring the liquid to boil at high heat.
7.) As soon as the clam shells are open, remove from heat and season to taste with salt.
8.) Garnish with the green part of the spring onion.
Remember to discard any clams that do not open as they may be contaminated. Enjoy!

How to Design the Ultimate Dessert Table

Dessert Tables... I'm loving that you can find a dessert table at almost every party. What's not to love? They look great in photos and they make a party look totally put together. P.S. if you didn't know, I have a total sweet tooth. :)

I recently helped to build a dessert table at my niece's big 1st birthday bash, here's what you'll need to ensure am amazing table:

1.) Pick a theme - And go all out. We decided on an Under the Sea/Mermaid theme with turquoise and white as the colors. We go lots of lots of seashells and starfish to use as decor to bring the theme together.
2.) Table covering - Make sure you choose a table covering that will match your colors and theme. I got some colored tulle for the cake table to layer to look like waves, and a turquoise table cloth to cover the bigger table. I got some fishing net decor to add on top of each table and placed seashells and starfish all over
3.) Have a backdrop - This will be a focal point so you want to make sure there's a nice background for all the pictures that you'll be taking. You can also have a hanging banner.
4.) Candy jars - you'll want to fill candy jars with candies that follow along with your theme and color scheme.
5.) Cakes/Cookies - pick up the colors and theme elements in your cookies and cakes also. These can be from a bakery, homemade, or store bought all depending on your budget and time. Our cookies and treats were created by Pacestries and the big cake was by Final Touch Bakery. These should be displayed on cake stands or pretty plates. You'll want to make sure you have varying heights for each element to ensure good composition and balance.
6.) Favor bags - Don't forget, you'll want to make sure to include favor bags for you guests to take stuff home!

Review: July IPSY Glam Bag!

Hola friends! It's that time again, my July IPSY bag has arrived, and I so excited about this bag!! How cute is this neon pink scalloped edge bag?? This month's theme is "Sensationally Sunkissed". It's another summer themed bag. IPSY is a subsription make up bag that is personalized to your tastes (based on a personality quiz) that i get every month for only $10! It's so cheap, that's why I havent cancelled yet like other subscriptions I've tried. Get yours here.

Here's what was in my bag:
bareMinerals 5-in-1 BB Advanced Performance Cream Eyeshadow Broad Spectrum SPF 15
My review: This is a cool new product that I wouldn't ever try without IPSY, which is the main reason why I keep my IPSY subscriptions. I'm not used to using cream eyeshadows, so I'll need to practice with it, but it goes on pretty smooth and would be a good base for other eyeshadows.

Hang Ten Dark Tanning Oil SPF 08
My review: Bummed they gave me this, I don't use tanning oil, so I'll be giving this one away to someone.

Pixi Beauty Mini Tinted Brilliance Balm
My review: Cute little lip balm that can easily be throw into a clutch. I'm not a huge fan of the color, a bit too pink for me, I prefer more nude shades on my lips, but it goes on really nicely.

POP Beauty Sunkissed Bronzer
My review: This was a full-sized bronzer which is good. It's not too dark and goes on pretty smoothly, so I'll be using this one to help add a bit of color to my cheeks.

Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Beach Spray Conditioning & Texturizing Spray
My review: They gave me a beach spray last month, so I was surprised they gave this item to me this month. This one has soy and claims to renew hair, so it'll doesn't make your hair look too dry like other beach sprays. It also smells like the beach - i.e. suscreen or coconuts.

Are there any other subscription boxes I should try?

OC Fair is Back: 5 Favorites & 5 New Things

It's officially Summer and the OC Fair is opening this weekend.

Don't forget Friday, July 11 is opening day, and they allow free admission from 12-1PM. The OC fair runs from July 11-Aug 10. There's tons to do, so don't miss out on 5 of my favs and 5 new things to try.

The food... you can get everything you imagined fried. From fried Klondike ice cream bars, fried butter to deep fried White castles, I've had it all. And let me tell you, most of it will leave you unsatisfied with a mouth full of grease.

Here's my go to favorites at the fair... and don't forget to bring some friends so you can try everything!

1.) Roasted Corn - a classic, if you know me, I LOVE CORN. This is the must have item for me at the fair, they always have all the toppings for you to customize your corn to your taste, you can't go wrong here.

2.) Mexican Funnel Cake - this is a twist on the classic funnel cake. There's only 1 stand that sells this Mexican funnel cake but its' worth finding! It's basically a giant churro in the form of a funnel cake and you can top it with ice cream, strawberries and whipped creme. It's light and crispy, so it doesn't get to heavy like the traditional dessert. It's a must try!

3.) Porkabello Kabobs - These are bacon wrapped mushrooms stuffed with gouda cheese. These kabobs are delicious and gluttonous.

4.) Austrailian Battered Potatoes - The name says it all. Deliciousness served with warm cheese or ranch. Definitely make sure to have friends to share this with.

5.) Krispy Kreme Sandwich -  This is one of the more outrageous items that I do recommend trying if you're up for it. This is a Chicken sandwich with a jelly filled Krispy Kreme donut as the bun. The sweet and salty all work together to give you a pretty good balance. This is one of the better tasting crazy items served at the fair.

5 New Items to try this year:

1.) Bacon Wrapped Jack Daniels
– This is some sort of fried churro concoction with a whiskey kick at the end.
2.) Deep Fried Chicken Skin - This sounds amazing, the skin is the best part when it's served crispy like a chicharron. You can find this at Chicken Charlies.
3.) Deep Fried Doritos - This can also be found at Chicken Charlies, I wonder how this one will turn out.
4.) Texas Donuts is putting a twist on its popular giant donuts with new flavors like Cherry Pop Rocks, Banana Chocolate Cream and Peanut Butter Cup. Also new this year, a Latin twist with the new deep-fried Gansito.
5.) OC Brew Hee Haw - The 1st Annual Orange County Brew Hee Haw will be held Friday, July 11 - Sunday, July 13 2014. It's a craft beer roundup and will bring some of the best local craft beers. Includes free admission to the 2014 OC Fair.

Don't forget to check out the promotions page before you go to plan your visit, there's always different deals going on to save $ on admission or rides and games. Have fun and happy Eating!

The OC Fair is located at 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa, CA.

OC Fair Hours
