Hairspiration: Mermaids and Unicorns

Happy Friday! I love that the latest trend of hair has gone toward candy colored hair reminiscent of mermaids, unicorns and My Little Pony. I've always dreamed of having baby pink or lavender hair, too bad I work in a corporate office and would never be able to get away with that. A few years ago, I did have Ariel red hair and although I miss it sometimes, I do not miss the maintenance. It takes a lot of work to keep your hair looking beautiful and vibrant. I thought I'd share some of my favorite hairspiration images and tips for if you want to have fun bright colored hair like this. What color would you rock?

Currently, I've been playing with a subtle dusty rose hue in my hair. I am not a professional hair person at all - everything I know is through experimenting with my own hair. The photos above shows up brighter than in person because of the bright lighting. I've been using a Semi-Permanent dye and diluting it with conditioner to make it not as vibrant and applying this mixture over my black to light brown ombre. Because of this process, the color only lasts in my hair for about a week or two. But because it's not a lifting process, there is minimal to no damage on the hair. Only the ends, where my hair has been lightened previously, picks up the color. The few strands, that are the lightest blonde hold the color best, the lighter browns pickup the color slightly, but don't hold it for very long. I've tried many Semi-permanent dyes over the years: Ion Color Brilliance Brights, Special Effects, Manic Panic and Pravana ChromaSilk Vivids and here's how they rank.

What dye to use?
1.) Pravana ChromaSilk Vivids - This is the most pigmented dye out there, it will dye everything! Best bang for your buck and has the best staying power. It's a professional line that can be bought online. I used this on a friend and it lasted months! This will run you about $15 each.
2.) Special Effects - This was my preferred dye back when my hair was red, but it was always tough to find. I would always have to buy online and it did get a bit pricey since I needed two tubes to dye my entire head. It's about $13 each.
3.) Ion Color Brilliance Brights - This one was a great value and has decent staying power. You can buy it at Sally's for about $6. I've been using the magenta one and diluting with conditioner to get my subtle rosey hair.
4.) Manic Panic - This one's one of the most readily available dyes out there. It's probably one of the most know "punk" dye - they sell it at Sally's and Hot Topic. I liked the color selection out there, but did not feel like it was as pigmented as Special Effects. This is about $10.
Tips for keeping you hair color vibrant
Don't wash your hair - at least wash it as little as you can. Water, shampoo, all that strips the color out. Use dry shampoo to soak up oils in between washes.
Use special shampoo - If you have to wash, use color safe shampoo or purple shampoo (for blondes and ashier colors like grey or purple). Or you can even add a bit of your dye to your conditioner so that it deposits a bit of color back in as you wash.
Co-Wash - Use a sulfate free cleansing conditioner instead of shampoo to avoid stripping you hair of the color and/or essential hair oils. I usually co-wash the majority of the time, and regular shampoo/conditioner 1x a week.
