NYE Glittery Hair Roots

The glittering trend has been all over the internet, glitter brows, beards and even hair! This NYE, I thought glittery roots would be a nice little pop of sparkle for the New Year countdown. Pair this hair with neutral makeup and a more subtle outfit. It's super simple to do! Just bear in mind, glitter gets everywhere, so be sure to wash it out before you go to bed otherwise you'll have glitter in your sheets for days!

Black Plaid + Son of a Gun

black plaid shirt dress

Happy 1st day of winter! I love going up to LA on the weekend for adventures. I get to find cool gems like these unicorn-esk wings all over the city and get to eat delicious meals. This is how we do winter in Cali. I can still wear dresses and pair them with over the knee boots to make them winter appropriate. I snagged this black plaid shirt-dress from the recent Obey Warehouse sale and I've linked it below. These are my favorite boots that you keep seeing in my posts from Forever 21. They're sold out, but there's a chance they will restock them. Here's some similar ones. My purse is the Selma from Michael Kors.

I want to share my wonderful dining experience at Son of a Gun. Ever since hearing this was the seafood sister restaurant to Animal, I've had this on my "to try" list of bookmarks on Yelp. This is a small plates menu so we ordered 4 dishes to the 2 of us and that ended up being the perfect amount of food for lunch. Keep reading to see the deliciousness.

Son of a Gun Hamachi
HAMACHI, GALBI VINAIGRETTE, PINK LADY APPLE $14
This Hamachi dish was the perfect start to the meal. It was light and full of flavor. I love the sweet, salty and slight spice to it. I could eat this everyday if I had the option!

These are my favorite over the knee boots right now and are genuine suede and from Forever 21 (they're currently sold out, but they may restock, I've included similar options below). Black and Bling + Philz Coffee

What I love about LA is how around every corner, there seems to be cool wall art like this that provides the perfect #ootd backdrop. This outfit is what I call casual black and bling. I love to wear simple jersey dresses and dress it up with accessories like I did here.

I decided to wear this very bold sparkly necklace to punch up this outfit. Mirina Collections has amazing statement necklaces that are all hand made. Use my coupon code: THREADS20 to get 20% off your entire order sitewide on http://www.mirinacollections.com/.

So one of my favorite places to stop and get coffee is Philz Coffee. This coffee shop is orginally from San Fransisco, and they currently have 2 locations in LA - Downtown and Santa Monica. They make their coffee's one cup at a time, and you can really taste the quality. What they're known for, and what I always have to get, is the mint mojtio iced coffee. It's refreshing, minty, creamy and sweet. Something about this magical drink that puts me in such a good mood. I couldn't bear to put my drink down, so it because my accessory in this style post.

Threads :: Leaf me alone

So, I know it's been a while since I've done a threads post! I really need to make time for these outfit posts! Today's threads look is a two piece leaf print coordinating set from LuLu*s. I've been obsessed with 2 piece sets lately. I love the fun and sophisticaled look that comes out of a matching two piece set. This leaf print one is really fun to wear on night out, or break up the set for a more casual look. The top is an open back halter, and the bottoms are shorts that flow to look like a skirt. I paired this outfit with black lace up wedges from Lola Shoetique (also located in Santee Alley in Fashion District). Scroll thru for more from this look.

Mini Key Lime Pie Bites Recipe

I wanted to make some small bite sized pies for Father's day last weekend, so I thought that little mini key limes pie bites would be perfect. I adapted this recipe I found on Bon Appetit for this little baking project. I love this recipe because it uses coconut oil in place of some of the butter to give a nice tropical flavor. It also uses greek yogurt in the whipped topping to give that perfect tart flavor.

Recipe :: Easy Cappuccino Souffle

Easy Cappuccino Souffle

One of my favorite desserts is Souffle. I've always wanted to try to make my own at home, but was intimidated by all those scenes in movies where the souffle deflates. Luckily, I've found an easy way to make easy cappuccino souffle at home with some pintrest research. :)

You just need about 30 minutes, and you could be enjoying a warm, cappuccino souffle at home that is also gluten free! My favorite way to enjoy this is with a light dusting of powdered sugar and a big scoop of freshly whipped cream. You could also top with some fresh fruit and a scoop of vnilla ice cream.

Birch Box SoHo

On my recent trip to New York City, I stopped into the Birch Box flagship store in Soho.  I've always been a fan of subscription boxes, but have yet to try Birch Box. Subscription boxes are a great way to try new products without committing to a full size. The Birch Box store is set up similar to other makeup stores like Sephora and Ulta on a smaller scale. They have full sized products for sale and also themed Birch Boxes that would make great gifts.

Favorite Phone Apps

Hi Friends! I'm constantly on my phone so I thought I would share some of my favorite apps that I use on a daily basis. Hopefully you'll check these apps out and see if you will benefit from their use. Let me know what apps you use that I should check out also!

Photo Apps:
  • VSCOcam - I love VSCO for editing. Their filters and photo editing options are much nicer than instagram's. I usually edit my photos in VSCO before I put it into instagram.
  • Moldive - I use this app for collaging multiple photos into one. This app makes it easy to move the frames around on your gridded photos and also adjust the width of the frame lines.
  • Squaready - This is what I use to make my photos that I don't want to crop ready for instagram. It allows you to add a background to your photo to make it a square without cropping. I prefer to keep my background white to keep my photo clean in instagram, but there's also an option for a blurred background which I've seen look nice also.
  • Canva - This app is good for designing photos. I use this sometimes when I'm creating graphics for my blog posts on the go when I'm not near my laptop. There's lots of great layouts that you can customize with your own photos and words. It makes designing easy for anyone!
Productivity Apps:
  • Sunrise Calendar - I like the overall interface of this calendar a lot better than the standard Apple on my iphone.  It can be synced to your Google Calendar and even Exchange!
  • Wunderlist - If you're a list person, Wunderlist is awesome! You can also invite others to your lists so they can add items or check things off. I use this with my roommates for things we need for the house and groceries. It makes trips to Costco super easy!
  • Tinyscan - If you ever need to scan documents, this is an awesome app. It helps to scan your documents without the use of a traditional scanner. I've also even used this to scan some of my caligraphy to clean up in photoshop after to use for projects.
  • Waze - This is the best navigation app hands down! It uses data from other users to give you the quickest route and will automatically reroute if there's a faster way based on other people's driving times. There are alerts that pop up to warn you about a car accident, police or even construction up ahead. Also, now that Google owns this, the search function is even better. You can easily search for restaurants and other businesses to add to your trip.
  • Duolingo - You can learn a language in no time! They make learning a language similar to a game so it's makes it fun. I've been trying to brush up on my Spanish and even trying to learn some basic French!
Financial Apps:

  • Mint - This app is great for you to get an overall view of all your accounts. You can even set budgets for different categories to see what you're spending each month.
  • Splitwise - This is great for splitting shared expenses between roommates or close friends or even your significant other. You all add your individual expenses and let it know how to split up the changes and it will automatically calculate and consolidate who owes who at the end of the month so you arent sending a bunch of different people money. It really makes paying for rent and utilities a breeze.

What are your favorite apps? Let me know! :)

Recipe: Momofuku Milk Bar Corn Cookies

I love the Momofuku Milk Bar in NYC. It's a must visit when I go to New York and my absolute favorite thing from there is the Corn Cookie. Because, corn, duh! My friend brought a gift back for me from her recent visit - some corn powder from their shop - a necessary ingredient to making the corn cookie. Apparently, the chefs at Milk Bar make freeze-dried corn powder by grinding freeze-dried corn. You can find freeze-dried corn at Whole Foods. David Chang loves to use freeze dried ingredients because it carries lots of flavor. Just smelling the corn powder was heavenly. I love corn! They also sell the corn cookie mix and other mixes online and in their stores so you can make Milk Bar goodies at home.

Spring Beauty Trends

Spring Beauty Trends

I recently went to the Nordstrom Spring Beauty Trend Show at South Coast Plaza. It was a great event that started bright and early. I was very excited to see what they would show as far as spring beauty trends for this season.

Here's the details of this event:
The event ticket was $20 - which could be used toward any purchases as a Nordstrom gift card. Everyone at the event received a tote bag with some wonderful goodies. There was also snacks and coffee and jamba juice provided! The event started with a fun runway show that featured great spring fashions and of course amazing makeup. Each makeup line came out after the show for a few minutes and talked about new products that fit within the spring trends.

SoapBox Shampoo and Conditioner VoxBox Review

SoapBox is an amazing company that donates a month’s supply of clean water to a community in need with every item you buy. Soap=Hope. I love that this company believes in giving back too!

I recently received a VoxBox featuring SoapBox hair care products from Influenster. I received this product complimentary for testing and review purposes. I was not compensated for this and the opinions and statements below are my own. I've done a review for a product I received through Influenster before - see my previous review here.

Spring Cleaning: Makeup Shelf-life

When to throw makeup away

It's officially Spring and it's time to clean! I'm working on cleaning out all my old and unused makeup this week. Pin this image below for a handy guide on Makeup Shelf-life. When do you need to let it go and toss it? It's important to consistently toss old makeup because bacteria can grow and that's no good for your health.

Threads :: Happy Spring Florals

Happy Friday! It is officially the first day of spring! It's time to shed those layers and opt for something lighter and flirtier. I love the femininity of a good floral print. I also love that lace can be translated from winter to spring in lighter and brighter colors. Here's some of the threads I've been eyeing for some happy spring florals. :) Would you wear any of these? What have you been eyeing with a floral print?

Hairspiration: Mermaids and Unicorns

Happy Friday! I love that the latest trend of hair has gone toward candy colored hair reminiscent of mermaids, unicorns and My Little Pony. I've always dreamed of having baby pink or lavender hair, too bad I work in a corporate office and would never be able to get away with that. A few years ago, I did have Ariel red hair and although I miss it sometimes, I do not miss the maintenance. It takes a lot of work to keep your hair looking beautiful and vibrant. I thought I'd share some of my favorite hairspiration images and tips for if you want to have fun bright colored hair like this. What color would you rock?

Thai Turkey Larb

Thai Turkey Larb

I love Thai food because of it's bold sweet, salty, sour and spicy flavors. I wanted to try out one of my favorite dishes to order at home with a healthy twist. Larb in the U.S. is a minced meat dish (usually chicken, beef or pork) that is cooked and served with lettuce or cabbage to wrap. I had some ground turkey and thought it would make a great option to use as the protein in a larb dish. The original recipe I found is from here. Read on below for how to make this delicious healthy dish!

Forever 21 and Target Mini Haul

I wanted to share some items from mini-haul from Forever 21 and Target! I love buying accessories from F21 because they are so affordable. I love wearing bows in my hair, I think it adds a cute feminine touch to any look. These bows were a steal at only $1.80 each (links below). The little earring set was $3.90. Two card sets from Target were $1 each from the dollar section. I love when I find pretty things like this there, but we all know it can be dangerous and add up fast. What have you found lately in the dollar section or at F21?
